The University of Birmingham (UoB) is dedicated to reaching net zero for Scope 1 and 2 by 2035. This leading Russell Group institution manages an estate of heritage halls, nuclear licensed laboratories, and teaching facilities for more than 38,000 students.
The University is creating the smartest university campus in the world, using real-time building data to improve energy efficiency and space utilisation.
To support this goal, CILS, appointed by Siemens, delivered a major IoT-enabled lighting and space optimisation upgrade across 10 campus buildings.
The IoT platform gives the University a user-friendly interface to monitor all connected fittings’ and sensors’ energy consumption, fault statuses, carry out remote adjustments to lighting, and use occupancy analytics to improve planning across the campus.
They have the option to easily introduce additional IoT solutions for energy and operational efficiency like HVAC control, asset tracking, wayfinding and more.
energy reduction
saved in energy costs/year
carbon emission reduction/year
electricity saved/year

Katie Tyler, Buildings Coordinator and First Aid Coordinator for the School of Engineering, shared:
“The building occupants have expressed to me how happy they are with how the engineers who Tom and Paul brought in worked, they were all professional and communicated to occupants and myself what the programme was”.
