CILS implement Internet of Things (IoT) technology as a core part of lighting upgrades — to deliver unrivalled lighting energy savings and enable buildings to become truly ‘intelligent’. We specify smart sensors and controls designed for longevity, adaptability, and to future-proof each facility.
A smart building starts with intelligent infrastructure — and lighting is the ideal delivery method. In most cases, CILS install sensors directly into each light fitting, including non-maintained emergency fittings where required.

This approach creates a building-wide data network that not only provides advanced lighting control while creating a data spine throughout the building(s) to enable and support other energy performance and building intelligence measures.
Each connected light fitting measures its energy consumption. This granular data can be accessed at fixture level, by zone, or across the entire site — giving you precise insight and control over your building’s energy use.
The average measured lighting energy saving, resulting from an LED and IoT installation, is circa 90%.
The system can interface with other technologies – such as smart radiator controls and ‘plug load’ controllers – providing further energy savings.
The system – although fully stand-alone – can integrate with BMS systems via BACnet if required.
Most lighting-based control systems are closed and proprietary — designed to lock you into a single manufacturer’s products, typically their own fittings. In contrast, CILS specify open-protocol systems that offer flexibility, interoperability, and long-term value.
And, it’s inherently user-friendly. Whilst we encourage clients to take an interest in how the system works, CILS give full support throughout the service period – including any software updates and adjustments requested by the clients, as and when applicable.
The system is approved and trusted by Google, Apple, the NHS, and many others.
CILS lighting solutions use IoT controls combined with RIBA stage 4 lighting redesigns deliver up to 90% lighting energy savings.
This far outperforms ROI of LED-only upgrades or systems using basic controls.
IoT also makes building management more cost-effective and easy, and offers a range of intelligent solutions to further optimise and future-proof the premises.

Chris is an advocate of future-proof technology to address the climate crises. In 2011, he founded CILS to deliver energy efficiency, initially through LED lighting solutions. His primary drive now is helping clients achieve net zero profitably, and if possible, with a net positive contribution.
